Advent Calendar Day 9: Abounding Love
"And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ;" (Phil 1:9-10 KJV).

When Paul wrote to the church at Philippi, it had experienced conflicts within its faith community. As I watched a fractured nation the night of the Ferguson grand jury decision, Paul's prayer in Phil 1:9 spoke to me through my country's conflict. He petitioned on behalf of the Philippian partakers of grace that their love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight" for the purpose of discerning purity and blamelessness until the day of Christ (v. 9a NIV).
I petition that same today. Believers need their love to abound, or overflow, STILL more and more to show the Light to one another. Love comes from the Holy Spirit's infilling (Gal 5:22). His love heals all wounds in Christ. Paul spoke of God's love describing it attributes. He said, "love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things" (1 Cor 13:4-7).
Lord, work in us that our love may abound still more! Heal our land!
